South Axis
The South Axis of Amsterdam has a lot to offer. A grandeur, hardly fitting in the Dutch tradition. Many foreign architectures were involved in the designing. The South Axis is a concurrent of foreign sites like the South Bank in London, Potzdammerplatz in Berlin and La Défence in Paris. South Axis is not a nine-to-five district like La Défence. South Axis is supposed to become a district with a mix of functions like offices, apartments, hotels, restaurants, etc.
The Zuidas rivals well-known business locations such as Ørestadt in Copenhagen/Malmö and Potzdammerplatz in Berlin. Against nine-to-five neighbourhoods like Paris' La Défence, which is deserted at night, the Zuidas presents a mixture of offices, housing, hospitality, hotels, shopping centres. Comparable to Potzdammerplatz, with very bold architecture and a lot of attention to public space and art. And with the ‘Zuidas Man’, that particular variant of the human race you frequently encounter here. A beautiful and also difficult development, which is nevertheless being tackled differently from other European cities. You can see the Zuidas as a typical example of the self-confidence, guts and high level of current Amsterdam urban planning. We will also tell you about that during this architecture walk.
