Historic Amsterdam-North
Fragments of Amsterdam North are among the most picturesque in Amsterdam: the centuries-old Nieuwendammerdijk and Schellingwouderdijk. Behind the dike is an atmospheric Amsterdam School garden village. And further along, the idyllic early 20th-century garden villages of Disteldorp and Vogeldorp.
Thinking in categories, Noord is called a ‘modern’ district. Yet fragments of the district are among the most picturesque in Amsterdam. These include the centuries-old Nieuwendammerdijk and its extension, the Schellingwouderdijk. Very old sea dykes with their wooden low-rise houses, little churches, cross paths and ditches. In fact, one of Amsterdam's absolute highlights, still barely discovered by the tourist. Consequently, they are not on any through route, which is an advantage in this case.
Behind the dike is, rather surprisingly, a very attractive Amsterdam School neighbourhood with 1,000 single-family houses for workers. A garden village, built to a design by B.T. Boeijinga. Before the war, it was known as one of the most beautiful garden villages in Europe. Many houses had gardens and baths, which was revolutionary for the time.
Further west lie the idyllic early 20th-century garden villages of Disteldorp and Vogeldorp. Sometimes, in the case of Disteldorp, built for temporariness, but still inhabited after refurbishments. They are not the least architects who built there: Gratama, Berlage, van Epen and Van der Pek, among others. Moreover, these neighbourhoods were built according to the ideal of big housing man Keppler: low-rise, according to the ideal of the garden city.
Historic Amsterdam-Noord can be explored both by bike and on foot.
