Out of the old Castle of the counts of Holland the city has been growing very slowly, for centuries still as a village. A lovely village, even the most beautiful and richest of Europe, according to the Italian Lodovico Guicciardini, speaking about the Hague around 1560. And the grandeur was there anyway. To mention examples: during a stay in the Hague in 1536 Emperor Charles V gave the command to plant four rows of lime trees in 't Voorhout. Administrators from across the country built there city palaces - there are numerous monumental embassies now. On the way history is up for grabs, like the dramatic decapitation of Van Oldenbarnevelt and the assassination of the brothers De Witt. Along the route we will pass a long a series of former and current Royal palaces, including Palace Noordeinde from 1533, work Palace of Queen Beatrix.
