The social housing of Amsterdam is world famous. In the first 30 years of the 20th century a lot of houses for workers have been built with an extraordinarily high quality, unique in Europe. The alderman involved was Floor Wibaut, this year born 150 jaar ago. A bicycle tour along workers palaces.

Wibaut was convinced that ‘the point of departure for a higher civilization of the working class lies in the improvements of the dwellings.’ As a councilman he had been already intensively involved in housing, until he became alderman in 1914 as the first socialist one.
Only a bicycle tour covers more or less the social housing of the early 20th century. A tour via the workers palaces of De Klerk in the Spaarndammerbuurt. Through the attractive Oud-West with its rationalist complexes of among others Van der Pek. Through Amsterdam-Zuid for top monuments of De Klerk en Kramer. Through the Indische Buurt, wit its middle class dwellings. Not to mention the Transvaalbuurt in Oost, another highlight of social housing.
Duration: about 3 hours.
Price: 15 euros a person + the bicycle
